Song: Valerie Loves Me
Artist: Material Issue
Moment: Sophomore year, around prom. No, I was not one of those underclassmen who were hot property enough to be invited to prom, but we had a couple of friends who were at prom, which was being held in the Great Hall at Century Center. Also, our high school proms were never cool enough to play Material Issue--I think this was the tape I popped into Natalie's tape player in the car. Our friend Leslie was a promgoer; we were in the area and thought to drop in and visit her and her date, Chad (unlikely date name for a girl in a gothy black prom dress). We consisted of my friend Natalie and her old friends who were now back from college for the summer. I was slightly smitten with her friend's friend Kevin Smith (would it be cool to say he's the same Kevin Smith of Clerks-Mallrats-ChasingAmy-SilentBob fame? Cool, but not true. This Kevin was some type of music major, I think), and I think there was some old history between Natalie and her old friend (I don't know--maybe he was called Ian?). Anyway, the reason I remember this song and these boys is because they remarked about liking my taste in music or something along those lines. That was all it took--I was easy to impress if you stroked my musical taste. I wish I were still that cool with the tunes these days!
